Junk Removal vs. Dumpster Rental: Which Do You Need?
Updated
Short answer: if everything is ready to go now and you'd rather not do the lifting, book junk removal. If the junk is going to come out over a few days, like a remodel, and you're fine loading it yourself, rent a dumpster. We do both across the Temecula Valley, so we have no reason to steer you toward one over the other.
Junk removal vs. dumpster rental at a glance

When junk removal is the better choice
- The items are big and heavy. A sectional, refrigerator, treadmill or hot tub still has to be carried out and lifted over the side of a dumpster. With junk removal, that's our job.
- It's ready to go today. If the garage is already full, there's no reason to have a container sit in the driveway for two days. We load it, sweep up and leave.
- You don't have room for a dumpster, or your HOA doesn't allow one.
- Some of it is still good. We set aside usable furniture and household goods for Habitat for Humanity and other local charities. In a dumpster, everything goes out together.
When a dumpster is the better choice
- The debris comes out over several days. Kitchen and bath remodels or new flooring: you fill it as you work instead of piling debris in the yard.
- You have the people and time to load it. You're paying for the container and disposal, not a team's labor.
- It's mostly loose debris like drywall, lumber, cabinets and yard waste rather than bulky furniture.
Which one costs less?
It depends on how much you have and who does the work. A 20-yard dumpster holds about the same as our full truck, so for the same amount of junk the real difference is the labor and the time. For a few items or a single room, junk removal usually comes out ahead because you only pay for the truck space your items take up, starting at $148. For a multi-day project you load yourself, a dumpster is usually the better deal.

Heavy material changes the math
Concrete and dirt aren't allowed in our dumpsters; our team hauls them instead, priced on site after we see the pile. Roofing shingles are OK, but call us first at (951) 291-1700 so we can work out the squares and layers on your roof and put you in the right dumpster. Every dumpster rental includes up to 1 ton (2,000 pounds), and tile or other dense debris can pass that quickly, so tell us what you're loading when you book.
Can you use both?
Yes. On a bigger remodel it often makes sense to rent a dumpster for the construction debris and book junk removal for the old appliances and furniture. Tell us about the project and we'll set up both. See dumpster rental and junk removal for details.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper to rent a dumpster or hire junk removal in Temecula?
It depends on how much you have and who loads it. For a few items or one room, junk removal usually costs less because you pay only for the truck space you use, starting at $148. For a multi-day remodel you load yourself, a dumpster is usually the better deal.
How much does a dumpster hold compared to a junk removal truck?
Temecula Valley Junk Pick-Up's junk removal truck holds about 21 cubic yards. We rent 15-yard and 20-yard dumpsters, so a 20-yard dumpster holds roughly one full truckload.
How long can I keep a dumpster?
Every dumpster rental from Temecula Valley Junk Pick-Up includes 2 days and up to 1 ton of debris. Extra days are $35 each, and weight over 1 ton is $98 per ton.
What can't go in a dumpster?
Concrete, dirt, paint, chemicals, motor oil, batteries, propane tanks, tires and other hazardous waste can't go in a dumpster. Tires can go on a junk removal pickup for a disposal fee.
Do I need a permit for a dumpster?
Not when it sits on your own driveway. If it has to go on the street, check with your city first, since many require a permit for containers in the road.
